Middletown, NY –(October 24, 2014) Matt Pappa made the most of his final race of the 2014 racing season when he powered his way to a runner-up finish in the 50 lap sportsman race at the Orange County Fairgrounds Speedway on Friday evening. This was the 17 year old sensation’s second visit to the 5/8ths mile clay oval and he had high hopes for a great finish after testing at the track early in the 2014 season.
The Eastern States weekend is one of the most historic races of the year and Pappa got off to a great start by winning his heat race lining him up 9th for the tough 50 lap grind. At the drop of the green Pappa started blasting his way to the front and going for fifth he tangled with another car making the rest of the race quite an adventure.
“When I was passing for fifth a guy came down on me and knocked my rear end out of whack,” stated Matt. “The rest of the race I was driving down the straightaway sideways. It was crazy but I still made my way up to second.”
This was Pappa’s best finish at Orange County and TeamTwenty almost had a clean sweep of the weekend with teammate and mentor Brett Hearn winning both the small block and big block races on Saturday and Sunday.
“I really wanted to win,” exclaimed Pappa. “Brett won both races last year at Eastern States and I knew he would be tough to beat this year. I can’t thank Brett and my guys for such a great car. My parents have been amazing as they are every year for me and my sponsors are what make this whole thing happen.”
Matt’s plans are up in the air for next year as to what division he will be racing. Stay tuned to find out.
“My highlight of the weekend was Sunday in Victory Lane when Brett mentioned that it was such a great weekend for our team,” said the jubilant racer. “Hearing him mention me being interviewed was very cool.”
